Outcome Management

The word "Outcome" is one of the most commonly used words in the healthcare industry today. Payers, providers, consumers, managed care organizations, JCAHO, NCQA, HICFA, etc., are all currently struggling to find methodologies and approaches to measure, monitor and manage outcomes.

The healthcare industry has had some experience in working with clinical outcomes. The challenge today, however, does not lie in the achievement of clinical outcomes alone but also in the achievement of clinical, quality, cost and revenue outcomes. Some important questions:

How are outcomes determined?
Which outcomes should be measured?
How does the organization know that the right outcomes are being achieved and measured?
Which outcomes are necessary for JCAHO, NCAQ, Consumers, payers, etc.?

The challenge is not only to design outcomes but to design a measurement system to measure outcomes. The measurement system must be designed to be total so that the outcome data can be readily used to manage and predict performance requirements.
